Description

The Heritage Building Conservation Grant Program provides funding to help preserve Nova Scotia's registered heritage buildings through restoration, conservation, and professional building conservation assessments. Funding supports projects that follow recognized heritage conservation standards and protect the long-term integrity of historic properties.

Eligible Applicants

Have a property that is:

  • Registered as a heritage property at the municipal, provincial or federal level; or
  • Currently undergoing designation with an application already submitted.
  • Eligible properties include residential, institutional and nonprofit-owned heritage properties.

Not eligible:

  • Government-owned properties (unless leased to a registered nonprofit responsible for maintenance).
  • Properties assessed entirely for commercial purposes, unless owned by a registered nonprofit society.

Eligible Projects:

  • Restoration or repair of exterior heritage building elements.
  • Restoration of heritage landscape features, such as original fences, walls and gates.
  • Building conservation assessments completed by qualified professionals.

Projects must:

  • Follow the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Heritage Places in Canada.
  • Use historically appropriate materials and designs.
  • Not begin before grant approval.

Eligible Expenses

  • Exterior restoration and repair work.
  • Conservation of character-defining heritage features.
  • Professional building conservation assessments.

Ineligible Expenses

  • Work started before grant approval.
  • Projects that do not meet heritage conservation standards.
  • Routine maintenance projects that do not contribute to long-term conservation (such as general painting).

Funding Details
  • Estimated Amount Per Fund
    Up to $3,000 per applicant per calendar year
  • Letter of Intent Required
    No
  • Funding Notes
    • Grants reimburse eligible costs after the project is completed.
    • Applicants must contribute at least 50% of total project costs.
    • Funding is provided only after submission of required documentation, including photographs, receipts or the completed conservation assessment report.
    • Priority is given to projects involving structural repairs, building envelope conservation and protection of character-defining heritage features.
    • Applicants receiving funding must acknowledge the support of the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia.
