Description

The RBC Barrier Buster Grants Program provides funding for permanent accessibility infrastructure improvements across Canada. Administered by the Rick Hansen Foundation in partnership with RBC and RBC Foundation, the program supports projects that remove physical barriers and create spaces welcoming to people of all ages and abilities.

This round celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Rick Hansen's Man In Motion World Tour. Forty grants of up to $40,000 are available for accessibility improvement projects at facilities owned or leased by eligible organizations.

Eligible Project Types:

  • Accessible play spaces (tactile surfacing, transfer platforms, adaptive swings, wheelchair-accessible equipment)
  • Inclusive exterior access and parking (drop-off zones, curb ramps, wayfinding signage, accessible pathways)
  • Accessible workspaces (hearing induction loops, adjustable lighting, height-adjustable desks, quiet zones)
  • Accessible recreation facilities (adult-sized change tables, roll-in showers, grab bars, pool lifts, zero-entry pools)
  • Inclusive emergency preparedness (evacuation chairs, visual flashing alarms, tactile signage, emergency communication devices)
  • Elevators and lifts
  • Accessible washrooms and kitchens
  • Parks, trails, and marine access improvements

Project Requirements:

  • Must be located in Canada
  • Property must be owned by applicant OR leased long-term with at least 5 years remaining as of March 15, 2026
  • Must address specific barriers for people with disabilities
  • Must result in permanent, tangible accessibility improvements
  • Must meet CSA/ASC B651:23 Accessible design for the built environment (where applicable)
  • Must be completed by January 31, 2027

Budget Requirements:

  • Projects over $40,000 must have secured additional funding at time of application
  • Only expenses incurred after the grant award date are eligible
  • Supplier quotes required for items over $10,000
  • Professional consultation costs must not exceed 20% of the requested grant
  • Grant funds cannot be used for Community Engagement Events or plaque installation

Recipient Obligations:

  • Host a Community Engagement Event by June 4, 2027 to celebrate the completed project
  • Install an RHF-provided plaque at the project site (installation costs covered by recipient)
  • Provide a representative for an interview and consent to RHF sharing and publishing the project story
