Description

The Housing Accelerator Fund provides incentive funding to local governments to remove barriers and accelerate housing supply across Canada.

With a total of $4 billion (2022–27) and an additional $400 million (to 2027–28) announced in Budget 2024, the Fund provides incentive funding to local governments to create lasting changes that speed up housing approvals and increase supply. The program is expected to support at least 112,000 more housing units permitted than would otherwise have occurred.

The Housing Accelerator Fund supports the development of affordable, inclusive, equitable and climate-resilient communities through two streams:

1. Large/Urban Stream

Communities with populations of 10,000 or more in Canadian provinces.

2. Small/Rural/North/Indigenous Stream

Communities meeting one of the following criteria:

  • Population under 10,000 in any Canadian province
  • Located in a territory
  • Indigenous government

Eligible Uses

Incentive funding can be used for prescribed investments in four categories:

  1. Housing Accelerator Fund action plans
  2. Affordable housing
  3. Housing-related infrastructure
  4. Community-related infrastructure that supports housing
