Description

The Green Municipal Fund's Sustainable Municipal Buildings program provides combined grant and loan funding to help municipalities construct new sustainable municipal and community buildings that achieve exceptional environmental performance. This program supports innovative new construction projects that demonstrate leadership in sustainable design, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance municipal climate goals.

The program funds new construction projects that incorporate advanced building technologies, renewable energy systems, high-performance building envelopes, efficient mechanical systems and innovative design approaches. Projects must target net-zero or near net-zero performance and demonstrate measurable environmental benefits throughout the building lifecycle.

Eligible projects include new municipal offices, community centers, recreation facilities, libraries, fire stations and other municipally-owned or community buildings. The program emphasizes multi-solving approaches that deliver environmental, social and economic benefits while serving as demonstration projects for sustainable building practices.

Project Requirements:

  • Projects must involve new construction of municipal or community buildings
  • Must demonstrate significant greenhouse gas emission reductions compared to baseline
  • Requires completed feasibility study demonstrating technical and financial viability
  • Must include energy modeling showing projected performance
  • Projects must target high environmental performance standards
  • Climate Risk Assessment required for projects over $2 million
Additional information

Note: Non-municipal applicants must partner with a municipality and provide municipal council resolution.
