Description

The Community Facilities Improvement Program supports community-led repairs and improvements to existing community facilities across Nova Scotia. The program funds projects that enhance public use of facilities and contribute to their long-term sustainability, including building exteriors, interior features and energy efficiency upgrades.

Eligible Projects:

  • Exterior facility improvements, such as siding, gutters, roofing, or other projects
  • Interior facility improvements, including kitchen upgrades (large appliances eligible only as part of larger kitchen renovation, subject to departmental approval)
  • Improvements related to the Nova Scotia Building Code Regulations, including electrical upgrades
  • Improvements to building efficiency, such as insulation, windows, doors, or heat pumps

* If you are applying for energy efficiency upgrades, such as heat pumps, you are strongly encouraged to contact Efficiency NS to determine if you can get a rebate.

** For projects that are primarily accessibility improvements, the applicant should apply to the Community ACCESS-Ability Program.

Project Requirements:

  • Projects must have defined start and completion dates
  • Applicants must comply with all necessary legislative requirements including the Fire Safety Act, Building Code Act, Accessibility Act and Heritage Property Act
  • Organizations must submit final reports within 30 days of project completion, including invoices, proof of payment and images of completed work

Ineligible:

  • New construction or improvements to new construction/extensions
  • Paving or general landscaping projects
  • Application preparation costs
  • Items not directly related to physical structure (generators, solar panels, seating, storage)
  • Public wharfs, playground equipment, parks, trails
Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must:

  • Operate primarily for community, culture and diversity
  • Provide programs serving the broader community (not just organizational membership)
  • Own the property OR hold a long-term lease of at least 5 years
