Description

The Electrify Nova Scotia MHZEV Rebate Program provides rebates to Nova Scotia municipalities, First Nations, businesses, and non-profit organizations for the purchase or lease of qualifying medium and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles. The program aims to accelerate zero-emission vehicle adoption in Nova Scotia by providing convenient and fast rebates on eligible vehicles.

Administered by Clean Foundation and funded by the NS Department of Energy, the program launched on April 1, 2024. Rebates are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and will remain available until the program budget is exhausted or the program is terminated by the Province.

The program aligns with Transport Canada's federal iMHZEV (Incentives for Medium and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles) program, meaning eligible vehicles match the federal list. The provincial rebate can be stacked with the federal iMHZEV incentive, up to 75% of the vehicle's MSRP.

Eligible Vehicles:

  • Zero-emission vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 8,500 lbs
  • Battery-electric vehicles with no combustion engine or fuel cell
  • Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
  • Ice resurfacers (7,501 lbs and above) — eligible for provincial rebate only, not federal iMHZEV
  • Demonstrator vehicles with less than 10,000 km on the odometer

Commercial Vehicle Criteria (Classes 2B and 3):

To qualify as a commercial vehicle, the model must meet one or more of the following:

  • Seating capacity of 9 passengers or more
  • Cargo area with a minimum length of 183 cm (for pick-up trucks, measured from inside bulkhead to inside closed tailgate)
  • Truck with container attachment capabilities (e.g., chassis cab, half truck)

Class 2B and 3 vehicles that do not meet commercial criteria are classified as Medium-Duty Passenger Vehicles (MDPVs) and receive a lower rebate amount.

Per-Organization Limits:

Each eligible organization can receive rebates for:

  • Up to 5 Class 2B Passenger (MDPV) vehicles per calendar year
  • Up to 5 Class 2B Commercial–Class 8 vehicles per calendar year
  • Up to 3 ice resurfacers per calendar year

Vehicles Purchased Outside Atlantic Canada:

Vehicles purchased outside Atlantic Canada are eligible but receive 75% of the standard rebate amount, provided the vehicle type is available for purchase within the Atlantic provinces.
