The Flood Risk Infrastructure Investment Program (FRIIP) supports investment in infrastructure needed to protect Nova Scotia communities from flooding. The program has its largest long-term impact when used for study and design work that prepares municipalities for larger flood mitigation projects. Preference is given to projects identified through infrastructure risk assessment studies.
The Province encourages inter-municipal cooperation, and collaborative projects may receive special consideration in funding decisions. Projects may be invested in non-municipal infrastructure provided all involved parties are in agreement, with demonstrated support from key stakeholders (neighbouring municipalities, provincial/federal departments, private sector, homeowners).
Eligible project categories:
River training and floodway improvements: Infrastructure projects including nature-based solutions to manage river systems and improve floodways (e.g. bank stabilization and erosion control, channel modifications to improve flood capacity).
Floodwater containment and flood intensity mitigation: Construction of flood control structures; retention and detention systems; barriers and protective infrastructure to reduce flood impacts; works to decrease flood depth and intensity.
Studies and mapping: Engineering studies and assessments; flood zone mapping to identify flood-prone areas; flood risk assessments and mitigation planning; identification and evaluation of potential solutions to reduce flood impacts; design drawings and specifications.
Project requirements:
Applicants must demonstrate ability to cover remaining project costs through municipal and/or other funding sources. Each municipality or village may submit a maximum of two applications per intake. Preference is given to applicants with no current active FRIIP projects or outstanding reporting requirements with the Department.
