Description

The Municipal Fleet Electrification Capital Project stream provides combined loan and grant funding for municipalities to achieve partial or complete transition of municipal and/or transit fleets to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). This program supports the replacement of internal combustion engine vehicles with battery-electric, plug-in hybrid electric, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, along with required EV supply equipment (EVSE) and facility upgrades.

Projects can focus on vehicle replacement, deployment of EV charging infrastructure primarily dedicated to municipal/transit fleets, or comprehensive multipronged approaches. The program aims to significantly reduce corporate GHG emissions in alignment with Canada's 2030 and 2050 climate targets while reducing fuel and maintenance costs for municipalities.

Eligible Project Components:

  • Replacement of internal combustion engine vehicles with ZEVs (battery-electric, plug-in hybrid electric, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles)
  • Required EV supply equipment (EVSE) installation
  • Facility upgrades to existing buildings to support electrification
  • EV charging infrastructure primarily dedicated to municipal/transit fleets

Vehicle Eligibility:

  • Battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
  • Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (if project demonstrates low carbon intensity ≤4 kg CO2e per kg hydrogen)
  • GMF may consider other electric vehicles and equipment on case-by-case basis

Project Requirements:

  • Project must replace one or more existing vehicles with ZEVs OR deploy necessary EV charging infrastructure for municipal/transit ZEVs
  • Projects with new infrastructure assets >$2 million must conduct Climate Risk Assessment
  • Applications accepted year-round until funding allocated
