Description

The Rapid Adaptation Projects: Adaptation in Action program provides funding to small and rural Canadian municipalities to implement immediate climate adaptation projects that reduce climate-change risks. Through grants of up to $75,000, the program supports practical, proven solutions focused on wildfire resilience, flood mitigation, extreme heat response, and resilient community facilities. Eligible projects may include measures such as firebreak construction, rain gardens, cooling infrastructure, and facility upgrades. In addition to funding, successful applicants receive technical support and peer learning opportunities through the GMF Rapid Adaptation Accelerator.

Projects must focus on practical, proven, and replicable activities that can be completed within two years.

Applicants must select one project focus area:

  • Community wildfire resilience
  • Community flood resilience
  • Community heat resilience
  • Resilient community facilities

Eligible activities may include:

  • Firebreak construction
  • Rain gardens and bioswales
  • Cooling kits and shade structures
  • Facility resilience upgrades

Projects must align with a climate risk assessment or adaptation plan.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Applicants must be a Canadian municipality with a population under 50,000, an eligible Indigenous community, or an eligible municipal partner applying in partnership with a municipality.
  • Projects must focus on one eligible climate adaptation area: wildfire resilience, flood resilience, heat resilience, or resilient community facilities.
  • Proposed activities must be new, proven, and replicable climate adaptation initiatives that reduce climate risks.
  • Projects must align with a municipal, provincial, or territorial climate risk assessment or climate adaptation plan.
  • Projects must be completed within two years of approval.
  • Eligible project costs must be under $1 million.
  • Only one project per lead applicant is permitted.
  • For-profit organizations are not eligible.

    • Applicants are required to upload a completed application form, project workbook, and all supporting documents.
    • The project workbook must be downloaded from the portal, completed offline, and uploaded with the application.
    • A GMF project officer reviews all submitted applications for completeness.
