Description

The Science Horizons Youth Internship Program is a federal wage subsidy program that helps post-secondary graduates gain work experience in environment-related STEM fields. Funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the program is delivered through four partner organizations, each focusing on specific environmental sectors.

Employers receive up to 80% wage subsidy (maximum $25,000) plus up to $5,000 for training and wrap-around services. Employers must contribute minimum 20% of total internship cost. Internships run 4-12 months, minimum 30 hours per week.

Applicants must apply through one of four delivery partners based on sector alignment. Each partner manages their own application process, review timelines, and specific deadlines.

Four Delivery Partners

Choose one delivery partner based on your organization's sector:

BioTalent Canada

  • Sector Focus: Bio-economy and biotechnology organizations
  • Funding: 80% wage subsidy up to $25,000 (all interns) + up to $5,000 training/wrap-around

Clean Foundation

  • Sector Focus: Clean economy (energy efficiency, water health, waste reduction, sustainable transportation) - Atlantic Canada focus
  • Funding: Job-ready youth: 50% up to $25,000; Employment equity groups: 80% up to $25,000 + up to $5,000 training/wrap-around

Colleges and Institutes Canada (Career Launcher)

  • Sector Focus: Clean tech and environmental (eco-tourism, green manufacturing, health, resource conservation, sustainable energy, sustainable planning, wildlife conservation)
  • Funding: Job-ready youth: up to $20,000; Youth facing barriers: up to $25,000 + up to $5,000 training/wrap-around

ECO Canada

  • Sector Focus: General environmental sector (science, technology, engineering, mathematics)
  • Funding: 80% wage subsidy up to $25,000 (all interns) + up to $5,000 training/wrap-around

Eligible Interns (All Delivery Partners)

Interns must be:

  • Post-secondary graduates
  • Ages 15-30 at start of internship (BioTalent: age 30 or under)
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons granted refugee status in Canada
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Available for minimum 4 months full-time work
  • Not receiving Employment Insurance benefits during internship

Eligible Internship Positions (All Delivery Partners)

Internships must be:

  • 4-12 months duration, minimum 30 hours per week
  • In environment-related STEM field
  • New position (not replacing employee on leave or current employee moving to new position)
  • Paid through employer's established payroll system

Training and Wrap-Around Services (All Delivery Partners)

Up to $5,000 additional funding available for:

  • Certifications and training at eligible institutions
  • Language opportunities for official minority language communities
  • Mentorship and career coaching
  • Conferences and workshops
  • Transportation and relocation costs
  • Childcare and family care
  • Work protective equipment
  • Adaptive/assistive technology

Must be pre-approved by delivery partner. Reimbursed with final wage subsidy payment.
