Description

The Community Recreation Capital Grant assists in the development of indoor and outdoor capital recreation projects that respond to the recreation goals and priorities of communities, as well as the Shared Strategy for Advancing Recreation in Nova Scotia. The program supports initiatives that sustain, improve or expand participation in recreation, sport and physical activity across Nova Scotia.

Program Objectives

  • Improve quality of life for Nova Scotians through sport, physical activity and recreation
  • Support development of effective and integrated system of high-quality recreation opportunities
  • Assist communities in developing and improving recreation infrastructure
  • Advance equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in recreation facilities
  • Foster community engagement and inclusivity through recreation projects

Eligible Project Examples

  • Renovation or expansion of existing community recreation facilities
  • Development of new small-scale facilities
  • Equipment that is permanent, non-consumable and capital in nature
  • Investment in operational or structural integrity of facilities (replacing roofs, furnaces, playground components)
  • Projects that contribute to physical activity, sport and recreation priorities
  • Projects responding to climate change and/or resiliency to extreme weather events

Ineligible Projects and Costs

  • Consumable non-fixed furnishings
  • Maintenance activities
  • Equipment that can be carried or worn
  • Projects with total cost greater than $30,000

Key Requirements

Facility must have recreation, sport and/or physical activity as its primary function and must be open to all members of the public at reasonable times and at a reasonable rate or no cost.

Project end dates must be before March 1 of the following calendar year (e.g., projects submitted for funding in 2025 must end before March 1, 2026).

Applicants must own the property or facility OR maintain a long-term lease of at least five years with the owner. Proof of ownership or lease required.

Only eligible project expenses incurred after the application is submitted and/or when an applicant has opened a file with their CCTH Regional Manager are eligible for reimbursement. Applying or opening a file is not a guarantee of funding.

Applicants expected to follow their organization's procurement policies. If none exist, recommended to obtain three quotes. If less than three quotes included, provide rationale.

Proposed work must comply with all municipal, provincial and federal regulations.

All overdue final reports for previously funded applications must be submitted and approved before additional requests can be fully considered.

  • Applicants strongly encouraged to speak with a Regional Manager in advance of any deadline and before applying
