The Community Wildfire Prevention Grants are offered through Wawanesa’s Climate Champions initiative to help communities across Canada reduce their wildfire risk through prevention and mitigation activities.

Projects should help build a culture of wildfire prevention and reduce potential damage to communities caused by wildfires.

Eligible Applicants

• • Fire departments
  • Municipalities
  • Indigenous communities
  • Home or neighbourhood associations
  • Non-profit or charitable organizations
  • Citizen groups or volunteer community groups

Applications from disproportionately affected communities may be prioritized.

Ineligible Applicants

• Previous Wawanesa Community Wildfire Grant recipient communities
• Privately held for-profit companies or corporations
• Individual land or property owners seeking funding specifically for single-dwelling or residential property prevention projects

Eligible Activities

• Projects must support wildfire prevention or mitigation and align with one of FireSmart Canada’s seven disciplines.
• Prevention activities reduce the likelihood of wildfire, including activities that encourage changes in behaviour.
• Mitigation activities reduce the impacts of wildfires, including fuel reduction activities.
• Projects should demonstrate a clear need for funding and focus on reducing or preventing wildfire-related damage in the community.

Ineligible Activities

• Wildfire response or suppression equipment
• Prescribed burn activities
• Normal operating costs of an organization
• Activities that conflict with funding provided through other partner programs, including FireSmart Canada or ICLR programs
• Activities outside the eligible expenses identified in the program’s Budget Template

Eligibility Requirements

Projects must:

• Focus on wildfire prevention or mitigation.
• Help build a culture of wildfire prevention within the community.
• Aim to reduce the likelihood or impacts of wildfire.
• Align with one of FireSmart Canada’s seven disciplines.
• Demonstrate a clear need for funding.
• Include a signed letter of support from the local fire department or another authorizing organization.
