Description

The Heritage Development Fund recognizes the cultural and heritage value of Nova Scotia's built heritage and supports conservation measures for properties registered under the Heritage Property Act. The program invests in projects that ensure the exterior appearance and core structure of registered heritage properties maintain their unique heritage values.

The fund operates through two distinct grant streams:

Stream 1. Conservation Work Grants

Supports conservation work projects carried out by property owners to maintain exterior appearance and core structure integrity. The program builds capacity for local heritage carpenters, contractors and property owners to complete conservation work projects.

Eligible Projects:

  • Conservation or restoration of original heritage features (e.g., windows, siding, roofing, masonry, structural stabilization)
  • Work that maintains heritage character or addresses urgent conservation needs
  • Cemeteries registered as heritage properties, for conservation work on monuments that are both in situ and at least 100 years old

Stream 2. Conservation Advice Grants

Supports the development of conservation plans prepared by architects, engineers, or qualified persons. The program builds professional capacity for appropriate conservation measures.

Eligible Projects:

  • Buildings or structures on registered heritage properties requiring professional advice to better conserve exterior appearance or core structural integrity
  • Monuments that are in situ and at least 100 years of age located within cemeteries that are registered heritage properties
