Description

This funding opportunity is offered under the Growing Canada's Community Canopies initiative. The program funds a combination of tree planting activities to meet local needs while maximizing benefits through strategic tree planting.

Projects with planting that supports environmental, economic and social objectives are more likely to receive funding. All projects require municipal government involvement and accountability.

Project Requirements

Forestry Requirements:

  • Demonstration of how project is supported by municipal or regional policies, plans, programs or guidelines
  • Planting plan including site selection, site analysis, tree selection, planting design, planting techniques and soil preparation (must be prepared or reviewed by forestry professional)
  • Engagement with professionals during project planning
  • Confirmation that inputs have been secured (tree stock availability, nurseries, land, labor, project partners)
  • Community engagement where project is taking place

Maintenance Plan:
Must describe how trees will be cared for after planting, including ongoing monitoring of tree health and survival and addressing tree mortality

Site Location:
Projects on civic lands preferred but non-municipal lands accepted where lead applicant is accountable for ongoing tree maintenance and survivability during first year (letters of support from landowners required)

Council Support:
All projects require resolution or letter of support from municipal council in whose jurisdiction planting will occur

Survivability:
10% holdback (up to $100,000) required for maintenance and monitoring report one year after planting completion, including tree survival rates

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible Tree Planting Activities:

  • Street tree planting: Thoughtful placement of trees along public streets, enhancing aesthetics, providing shade, improving air quality and reducing noise
  • Urban planting: Planting in areas with low canopy cover to lower temperatures and lessen the urban heat island effect
  • Park tree planting: Establishing new groves and revitalizing existing tree stands in public parks, keeping green spaces healthy and biodiverse
  • Riparian planting: Planting in flood-prone areas to increase soil infiltration and stability
  • Forest restoration and reforestation: Rehabilitating areas that have experienced die-offs caused by pests or wildfires
  • Community-wide urban planting: Large-scale planting initiatives across municipal boundaries
  • Localized planting projects: Targeted tree planting in specific neighborhoods or sites
