Description

The Museums Assistance Program (MAP) supports heritage institutions and workers in preservation and presentation of heritage collections through several components, each with its own eligibility criteria. The Collections Management component provides funding for projects to improve professional knowledge, skills and practices related to key museum functions for collections management in Canada. It also supports Canadian service organizations in development and delivery of resources or services that benefit multiple museums.

Program Objectives:

  • Improve professional knowledge, skills and practices for collections management
  • Strengthen professional standards related to key museum functions
  • Support development and delivery of resources/services benefiting multiple museums
  • Enable rematriation/repatriation of Indigenous cultural belongings and ancestral remains
  • Share best practices related to key museum functions across heritage sector

Eligible Project Categories:

1. Collections management systems, policies and procedures Projects related to development or implementation of systems, policies, procedures or practices improving collections management, including:

  • Optimization of collections storage conditions
  • Purchase, implementation or upgrade of collections management system (including staff training and associated activities)
  • Cataloguing and documentation of targeted collections for specific purpose (not related to ongoing operations)
  • Development or renewal of policies, procedures or protocols supporting key heritage functions
  • Development and implementation of emergency plans and kits

2. Rematriation/repatriation projects Projects related to research and documentation of collections or development of policies, procedures or protocols enabling or supporting rematriation/repatriation of Indigenous cultural belongings and/or ancestral remains.

3. Best practices sharing projects Projects related to sharing of best practices with respect to key museum functions, including professional development activities, development of tools and resources, or other initiatives strengthening knowledge, skills and practices within heritage sector. Minimum of three partners (heritage organizations) must be involved and benefit from best practices project.

Emergency Assistance:

Available year-round to help fund urgent actions needed to reduce damage to collections caused by external event or natural disaster (forest fire, flood, earthquake, etc.). Available to all incorporated non-profit Canadian museums, Indigenous governing bodies, and organizations with mandate to preserve and support Indigenous heritage. Eligible activities include moving at-risk collections and temporary storage expenses. Contact nearest regional office for information.

Key Requirements:

  • Program does not provide operational funding; only project-based funding
  • Projects must have clear start and end dates, defined activities, reasonable timeframe and measurable products/results
  • Products developed for general public (in person and online) must be available in both official languages
  • Applicants encouraged to develop content in other languages relevant to project
  • Program is highly competitive; requests for funding typically exceed available resources
  • Submitting application does not guarantee funding

Eligible expenses:

  • Pro-rated salaries and wages (municipal/provincial government salaries eligible but not reimbursable)
  • Travel for personnel working on project, excluding attendance to professional development activities (must comply with government business travel rates)
  • Honorarium, fees and travel for consultants, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and/or cultural practitioners (must comply with government business travel rates)
  • Equipment rental, shipping fees, promotion and communication expenses
  • Translation of public material in both official languages and other applicable languages (including Indigenous languages)
  • Materials and supplies
  • Minor capital assets (equipment): Maximum 25% of MAP project funding
  • Purchase of software
  • Staff training
  • Hospitality and gifts associated with traditional Indigenous ceremonies and protocol
  • Incremental administration costs (maximum 15% of eligible project expenses)
  • Project audit fees (if applicable)
